    Puerto Maldonado, is located in the south-eastern part of Peru, at the confluence of two rivers Madre de Dios and the well-known Tambopata, these names were designated by the Spanish explorer Don Pedro Maldonado. Almost all local transport is reduced to boats or canoes. Puerto Maldonado, where the beautiful Tambopata National Reserve is located, can be reached by plane or bus.

     

    Tambopata National Reserve enhances tourism in the region and protects its rich flora and wildlife. This tropical reserve is open to the general public, and our tours in the Tambopata National Reserve in the Amazon Jungle of Puerto Maldonado offer the perfect opportunity to fall in love with the tropical rainforest, but you should know that you risk never wanting to leave this unforgettable place.

     

    The tour offers you a visit to different places in the Amazon jungle, such as the monkey island and the parrot clay lick. Being able to observe at first sight a great variety of wild mammals, birds, insects, reptiles and more. In addition, you will be able to do many outdoor activities such as canopy zip-line, fishing and many more activities. Enjoy incredible night walks through the forest, share with real native indigenous people of the Amazon and learn about their way of life.     DETAILED PROGRAM - WATCHING WILDLIFE:

     

    DAY 01 (PUERTO MALDONADO - TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE PERU - SANDOVAL LODGE):

    Once we arrive in Puerto Maldonado (Capital of Biodiversity of Peru), our staff will pick you up from the hotel, airport or bus station and transfer you to our office in Puerto Maldonado, where you can leave your extra luggage; After this we will go to the Captaincy of Puerto Maldonado (Port or jetty) to board our covered motorized boat (canoe), going down the river for 45 minutes (approx.) to the Sandoval Lake area within the "Tambopata National Reserve "; During the tour we will find ourselves in a fascinating natural environment, where we will be able to observe a large amount of wildlife such as: caimans, capybaras, turtles, herons, cormorants and many other species of animals. To get to Lake Sandoval from the port we have to walk 3 km. or 1.86 miles (approx. 1 hour); once in the lake we will board a rowing canoe to cross the Sandoval Lake and 30 minutes after a walk, we will arrive at the Sandoval Lodge.

     

    Once at the lodge, we will be received with the nectar of the tropical fruits of the Peruvian Amazon, to later provide you with your comfortable bungalow (room accommodation). After that we will enjoy a delicious lunch as well as a short nap. After the siesta, our professional guide will lead us through a nice, well-signposted path to enjoy the spectacular sunset of the tropical jungle (a multicolored experience). And then, with the help of our flashlight, we are going to do a night walk in the trail system of the area, where we will have the opportunity to see night monkeys, snakes, frogs and different types of insects. Once again in our hostel, we will enjoy a delicious dinner, and then we will have the opportunity to enjoy unforgettable moments in our bar (games and drinks). Enjoy the night…

     

    DAY 02 (SANDOVAL LAKE - BRAZILIAN NUT TRAIL - SEARCH FOR CAIMANS):

    The day will begin in this ecological paradise with a mixture of sounds, and a delicious breakfast will provide us the necessary energy for a morning full of new experiences. Then we will board our canoe to take a tour in the Sandoval Lake, which constitutes a special ecosystem (huge variety of animals). In Lake Sandoval we can find a family of Giant Otters (pteronurus braziliensis), which generally frequent the lake; We will also be able to observe black and white caimans (alligators), turtles, the majestic jaguar, birds, etc.

     

    Sandoval Lake has abundant wildlife, including more than 40 species of resident lakeside birds; most waterfowl feed on fish around the lake; we will have the option to take excellent photos of the Hoatzins or Shanshos, prehistoric-looking birds, they are easy to photograph while we observe them from our canoe or catamaran.

     

    After the lake we will begin an adventure in a virgin forest trail (brazilian nut trail), which is unique and remains intact; During this walk we will observe a great variety of flora and fauna (flooded forest) such as: macaws, parrots, toucans and other typical birds of the place; a great variety of monkeys in their natural habitat such as: spider monkey, howler monkey, capuchin monkey, squirrel monkey, etc. and also other animal species such as Coati and sloths. Finally, we return to our lodge and end the day with a nice dinner. After dinner we will do a night activity, we will look for caimans (alligators), and then go to rest in the lodge.

     

    DAY 03 (SANDOVAL LAKE - PALM CLAY LICK - OBSERVATION TOWER):

    After a delicious breakfast we will begin a new adventure in this virgin jungle; Accompanied by our guide we will take a walk through the deep jungle, in the morning we will cross the Sandoval Lake, and after 20 minutes of walking we will visit Collpa Palmeras or Palms Clay Lick (flooded forest), where species of parakeets, parrots and macaws abound such as the white-eyed parakeet, the blue-headed parrot, the chestnut-fronted macaw and especially the red-bellied macaw, which return to the palm forest to rest and spend the night, this species of macaw is found in different parts of the Amazon, the palm forests are their living home. The Red-bellied Macaw flock at Lake Sandoval is currently one of the largest reported in the world with at least 500 birds.

     

    Then we will board our canoe again to cross the lake and walk for approximately 2 hours having the opportunity to see ancient trees such as: the iron tree, the ceiba, ficus, etc. typical trees of the tropical forest. After lunch and a short nap, we will board our canoe, this time to visit a 12-meter tower located on the edge of the reserve, enjoying the jungle once again. We return to our lodge and enjoy a good dinner. After dinner or whenever you prefer you can leave the dining room and enjoy a wide variety of moths, beetles, praying mantises and more; who are attracted to the black light in the clearing of the lodge. For those who still have energy for one more activity before resting, our guide will take you on a short night walk into the forest around the lodge.

     

    DAY 04 (SANDOVAL LODGE - PUERTO MALDONADO):

    After a grateful night, we will enjoy a delicious breakfast, after breakfast, we will do another flexible activity, we will walk in the forest to see more biodiversity of flora and fauna. Finishing lunch, it will be time to say goodbye to the jungle and start the return to the city of Puerto Maldonado, to leave you at the hotel, bus station or airport. During the tour we will be able to continue appreciating the wonder of the Peruvian jungle. End of service...

     

    OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

    • Canopy Walk, we will go to a canopy walkway (Hanging Bridge) for a new adventure, where we will be able to observe the immensity and majesty of the tropical forest from a different perspective (30 meters high), the bridges will allow us to appreciate the nature from above, we will have a panoramic view of the rivers, and from the platforms we will be able to observe different species of birds such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, orioles and much more. This will be an unforgettable experience.
    • Zip-line, when we finish the canopy walkway, we will prepare for the next activity that is full of adrenaline; you will be more than 30 meters high, on the trees doing Zip-Line; For this activity we will have a specialized guide, who will inform us about the use of safety equipment and how to use it correctly. There are two strong cables that support more than 3 tons, which will allow us to feel the thrill of sliding through the trees while enjoying the magnificent landscapes. This is one of those experiences that you will always remember.

    How long in advance should you make a reservation?

    • Reservations can be a minimum of 48 hours in advance. However, places are limited and are always subject to availability. Tickets for Tambopata National Reserve, are in high demand, running out months in advance in some cases. For this reason, we recommend making the reservation as far in advance as possible.

    To qualify for discounts for children, students or the Andean community?

    • Participants occupying a place (seats and beds) pay normal rate.

    Are there prices by type of accommodation?

    • Not, on the tour we offer standard accommodation. If preferred accommodation is desired, it must be coordinated with the agency.

    What is the weather like in Tambopata?

    • Tambopata is located in the Amazon jungle, having a warm and temperate climate, with an average minimum temperature of 20° C and an average maximum temperature of 30° C. From April to October is the dry season, that is, during that period there is a lower probability of rain, while from November to March is the rainy season. Despite the differentiation every day of the year there is the possibility of rain, since it is a tropical area (rain forest).
